Description:.  Magnificent, large format hand-embroidered on Silk banner-picture: “To commemorate my service in China” (Erinnerung an meine Dienstzeit, Tsingtao-China 1904-1907). Named to & with photo of: Matr. Artillerie G.MAYER. 

MAYER was an artilleryman on board the Reichsmarine heavy cruiser S.M.S. Bismarck during the Boxer Rebellion period. Large, heavily embroidered silk-backing mounted on a rigid board (26.5 x 44 inch); Elaborate 3-dimensional silk embroidery throughout of colored leaf stitching, gold & silver thread forming collages that include a Cannon, Torpedo, Anchor and the warship SMS Fürst (Prince) Bismarck.  Above are the Imperial Eagle with outstretched wings over the Imperial German Navy Flag & Crown. Great, remarkable condition for its age and just needs to be placed behind glass in an appropriate frame for its Turn-of-the-Century time frame. A beautiful, unique & named piece.                               

Background: SMS Fürst Bismarck was Germany’s first armored cruiser, built for the Kaiserliche Marine before the turn of the 20th century. The ship was named for the German statesman Otto von Bismarck. Launched 1897 and later assigned to the Reichsmarine East Asia Squadron and arriving in Tsingtao, China to aid in the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion there.
