This 1936 pattern Gold Wound Badge is a beautiful example of a badge that apparently was never issued and show no wear whatsoever; Although obviously made along with the black & silver variants, records indicate no Gold 1936 Wound badges were awarded to Germans during the Spanish CIvil War.This badge has great character and eye appeal. It’s made of a stamped brass alloy (Tombak). The finish appears gilt plated. The detail is phenomenal. The reverse is hollow and a mirror image of the obverse. The hardware setup features a heavy round wire pin, and a soldered pin and catch with the finish applied over the assembly; Unmarked as they typically are.
Background: During the Spanish Civil War the Third Reich reinstated the WW1 era Wound Badge for a short period to honor those who were wounded during the conflict from 1936 to 1939. These German units participating in the assistance of the Spanish Fascists were deemed the “Condor Legion”. The only difference to the WW1 era badge was the addition of a raised swastika at the center of the World War One era helmet design. At the outbreak of war in September 1939 with Poland, it was once again reinstated but in a slightly different overall design around an M35 helmet.
