Description: This desirable shorter version Senior Forestry Cutlass by WKC with a 12 inch is excellent to near mint showing very little usage. The fire gilded, all brass hilt has a nicely formed D guard which is decorated with raised oak leaves running the length and throughout the crossguard with deer hooves ending at the upper and lower area. The ferrule has lots of accent lines around it and the center has a raised section featuring a lined decoration running around the circumference. The clamshell depicts a hunting dog pointing his nose at a future prey. The left quillon end of the clamshell rises upward ending in a curl. The ivory-grip plates are in beautiful condition, both having nice golden tones throughout. The grip plates are decorated with the larger to smaller sequence type acorns unique to the WKC firm.
The triple etched 12 inch blade retains its high polish and superbly etched gray hunting scene details to both sides. The blade spine has oak leaf decorations over its length joining the etched panels on each side; thus “triple etched”. This blade is near mint, retaining its unsharpened factory edge. The obverse ricasso bears the maker’s logo of a stamped ‘knight head’ with the firm’s initials W.K.C. The original thick reddish brown leather buffer is in place showing little to no real wear.
The scabbard shell is of fine black leather showing some age but very little use with all tight stitching sewn up the reverse. Both upper and lower scabbard mounts have scalloped edges with the upper having the acorn lug nut and the lower having a double line decoration. The mounts are retained by heavy staples having their assembly number (#7 in this case) beneath them. The blade fits the scabbard snugly as it should.
