dark blue wool broadcloth construction; The crown stands 2″ high at the front, nearly 4″ at the rear seam and the top is 5″ in diameter. The body of the cap meets a band of wool seamed at the back and stiffened with leather. The cap’s interior is lined with black cotton having a Portland, Maine makers logo. Uncommonly, the original leather sweatband remains in-situ. Brass M1851 type Cavalry cap insignia & correct 2-pc brass US Eagle buttons maker marked Horstman Bros & Co. Philadelphia and between, 95% of the black leather chinstrap remains.The flat black patent leather visor is original to the hat and remains green on the underside. Not being edged in leather indicates that this is likely an earlier production kepi. Great overall condition for its near 150 yr age!
