BACKGROUND: Originally born in Romania and known affectionately by his crew as ‘Count Dracula’ Trojer joined the KM in 1936 and the U-boat force in 1938 spending the first part of the war as an officer on the U-34 & U-67. In March 1943 he commissioned the combat boat U-221. His first patrol was very successful, sinking 6 ships totaling +29K tons. He was awarded the Knights Cross via radio during his third patrol in March 1943. Between Sep 1942 & May 1943 he sank 21 ships for a total of +77k tons. Kapitänleutnant Trojer died with his entire crew on 27 Sept 1943 when the U-221 was sunk by aircraft in the Atlantic south of Ireland. This ensemble was surely his “closet hanger” for when he was home-on-leave.
