WW2 Uniform of B-29 Pilot Raymond Shumway 680th Bomb Squadron, 504th Bomb Group (Heavy); all original insignia to include: graduation pilots wing, gilt AAF collar brass, sterling 1Lt rank rank bars, 20th AAF shoulder patch and ribbon bars containing: Purple heart, Air medal, Pacific theater with two stars, Victory medal and Shumway’s Soldiers Medal Ribbon for rescue of crashed crewmembers (see citation copy dated 8-45); uniform is in excellent condition with tailors label as well as full ID label dated 3-43 and printed S/n of Shumway ‘S-7144’
BACKGROUND: Shumways B-29 crashed into the sea off the coast of Japan July 28th, 1945. He and 5 others of the crew of 11 were eventually picked up by the submarine USS Whale (SS-239) the following night. Details below: Aircraft lost: #42-24918 504th BG MACR 14796 Shumway; Crew 5 KIA.
